Low-Maintenance Houseplants That Thrive in Apartment Light

One of the best things about living at The Ridge is the way the light hits the rooms in the late afternoon. But if you’re like most of us, you might have a few corners. Maybe a hallway or a bedside table, that don’t get that prime "golden hour" glow.

The good news? You don't need a greenhouse-style sunroom to be a successful plant parent. There are plenty of stunning, hardy plants that actually prefer the mellow light of an apartment. Here are 8 varieties that will thrive in your space with minimal effort.

1. The Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

Often called the "bedroom plant," the Snake Plant is famous for its ability to convert CO2 into oxygen at night. It handles low light like a pro and only needs water when the soil is bone-dry.

2. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

With its waxy, upright leaves, the ZZ plant looks almost architectural. It’s incredibly drought-tolerant and can survive in rooms with very little natural light, making it perfect for an interior bathroom or entryway.

3. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

If you want that lush, trailing look on top of your kitchen cabinets, Pothos is the answer. It’s fast-growing and will let you know it’s thirsty with a slight wilt, bouncing back immediately after a quick drink.

4. Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior)

Living up to its name, this plant is nearly indestructible. It was a favorite in Victorian-era homes because it could survive the dim, smoky air of the time, so it will certainly handle a cozy apartment corner.

5. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

For a touch of elegance, the Peace Lily offers deep green foliage and occasional white blooms. It’s an excellent air purifier and acts as a "living thermometer"—it wilts dramatically when it needs water, taking the guesswork out of your routine.

6. Bird’s Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus)

Unlike many finicky ferns, the Bird’s Nest variety is much sturdier. Its bright green, ripple-edged fronds add a tropical texture to your decor without requiring direct sun.

7. Heartleaf Philodendron

This is a classic for a reason. Its heart-shaped leaves trail beautifully from a hanging basket or shelf. It’s more tolerant of low light than many other variegated plants, keeping its deep green color even in the shade.

8. Lucky Bamboo

Perfect for a desk or countertop, Lucky Bamboo doesn't even need soil—it can grow directly in a vase of water and pebbles. It’s a low-maintenance way to bring a bit of Zen to your home office.

Where to Find Them in Siouxland

When you’re ready to pick out your new "roommates," it’s always better to see them in person to ensure the leaves are healthy and the roots are strong.

While you can usually find basic varieties at the Home Depot (415 Cunningham Dr) or Earl May Garden Center (4141 Gordon Dr), those looking for a more boutique experience with plants that have been professionally acclimated to our local humidity should take the short drive to Southdale Nursery and Garden Center (930 S Lewis Blvd, Sergeant Bluff) in Sergeant Bluff. They tend to carry larger, more established indoor specimens that transition much more easily into an apartment environment than the mass-produced options elsewhere.
